A Jesus Christ by " Oscar " on stage Arcimboldi
He made his debut on the famous show Piparo chosen by the author Andrew Lloyd Webber A great cast and orchestra of 12 elements
Ferruccio Gattuso - Thu, 16/10/2014 - 07:00
A twenty year full of history and stories. That's why the " Jesus Christ Superstar " by Massimo Romeo Piparo - arriving at the Teatro degli Arcimboldi from October 16 to November 2 (21 hours, 69/29 euro entrance, info 02.54.66.367.) - Is back on the stage in an edition that will make your eyes pop, fans to this work as well as to fans of musicals. And the simple fact that it defines as the " Jesus of Piparo " - is a certificate of value delivered primarily by the public and, as a result, even from a "certain" Andrew Lloyd Webber. Yes because the news of recent days is that the Sicilian director, after years of observation under the lens of the legendary author of " Jesus Christ Superstar " and works such as "Evita," "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Cats" has been commissioned that says it all. "Webber," explains Piparo "has informed us that in the near future, Jesus will be our Member of the international tour. It will be the only official international tour, all other installations will be cleared. After a few disappointments here and there in the world, Webber me, so to speak, given the stars won on the field: he took me under his wing. It is the recognition of a work that, in our set-up, has radically changed the musical scene in Italy." The 2014 edition of JCS is really special because it features three main characters in the cast of the historical film version directed by Norman Jewison in 1973 after bringing in Italy during the Jubilee Year 2000, the Judas of the original film, Carl Anderson, Piparo is therefore able to drop a set of aces composed by Ted Neeley, Yvonne Elliman and Barry Dennen, respectively Jesus, Mary Magdalene and Pilate of the aforementioned cult movie. After the standing ovation the Sistine Chapel in Rome and at the Arena di Verona, "Jesus," then landed the Arcimboldi in the package now rodatissima: In addition to the protagonists of the rock opera, a live orchestra of 12 elements conducted by Emanuele Friello, an ensemble between 24 acrobats, stilt walkers, fire eaters and dancers choreographed by Roberto Croce, the sets of Giancarlo Muselli processed by Teresa Caruso, costumes by Cecilia Betona. And the figures do not stop there, because there are eleven years in a row on the bill in Italian theaters, more than a million spectators gathered, with more than 1,000 performances in 84 Italian cities. Of the three stars on the bill, Piparo explains, "Dennen was crucial in the history of this musical, Yvonne Elliman was missing from the scene for 10 years and just came back for us, Ted is with us for several months."

Second stage of the Arena di Verona on October 12, where "the structure of the show will be the same but - Piparo said today at a press conference - certainly 'risen', three stories high, for example, instead of two as in the Sistine Chapel, and where will be the author Tim Rice. "
"Finally - Piparo satisfied smiles - from London have recognized the strength of our choice," that is, to leave themselves as interpreters of the cast of the 1973 film "To the authors, first, Jesus had to be 30 years old. Currently, however, they seem to have recognized the validity of our vision. This - still observed - shows that in the theater nor the securities nor the actors have aged. Only what is transmitted counts. Tim Rice is, therefore, coming to Verona to see if the show can be exported. Neeley, Dennen and Elliman - announced - are already available to a European tour with the Italian production. If it goes through, it starts at the end of 2015.". Meanwhile, just a few hours before the performance of the three actors who return to work together at a distance of more than eight decades. "We are very excited - they say in unison - and we look forward to being on stage."
The work, highlights Piparo, "though he was known to all, never fails to excite and always finds hints of current affairs and news. One among all the message of peace that has ever launched, both in the 70s, years of war Vietnam, which later saw that, unfortunately, wars are not over in the meantime. And, in fact, I had always update images of the 39 martyrs that flow, from the Holocaust to the present, during the 39 lashes. during 2001 we finished the show with the image of the Twin Towers which is now relegated to the thirtieth position. Unfortunately, the message of redemption of humanity does not come to fruition yet, and perhaps will make Jesus Christ Superstar forever. "

Review Jesus Christ Superstar at the Sistine Chapel: a legendary Ted Neeley
Jesus Christ Superstar to review SistinaUna series of standing - ovation and roars of hands at the Teatro Sistina on the evening of Good Friday, April 18, 2014, for the first of Jesus Christ Superstar. The audience hot and conquered by the cast before the lift of the curtain: how to cloaks and coats do not know if they had taken to assist Italian edition celebrating the twentieth anniversary of one of the most beloved musicals of Broadway, or if they had dropped the steps of the house to dispense with admiration groupies heroes on stage. A soul that animates authentic rock musical written by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber since the seventies: a spirit fitted to perfection by exceptional interpreters who dropped the load to be ninety on a show absurdly contemporary .
Ted Neeley has walked on water. And not only in the literal sense, when the moving walkway in a minimalist setting but the successful launched into space, to the public, but throughout the show. It's been eaten from the room, every word a standing ovation . They were waiting for Christ "original", what, especially for Italians that before at the theater, Jesus Christ Superstar have appreciated on the big screen, was the Jesus film of the widely Norman Jewison film. A not insignificant burden on the shoulders of the American actor, however, led admirably: Neeley confirms the rule that the presence and mastery of the stage does not depend on the height, but the ability to draw the audience into the emotional notes higher.
A score of many voices, which could Neeley chicane due to the presence of interpreters also exceptional. Shel Shapiro led the guise of Caiaphas, Simona Molinari those of Mary Magdalene, the historical Jesus was Italian Paride Acacia Hannas, Emiliano Geppetti dressed Simon, while the role that acts as a key to reading the whole story, that of Judas, is Feisal was played by newcomer BONCIANI, invested by the Neeley 's role, and good teacher of the dances of the evening. Special mention to Paolo Bruni, aka Pau, who undressed the role of lead singer for getting Pontius Pilate, sunglasses and loud voice, he's washed his hands of his Negrita, to play, however, as in the best their performances throughout the evening . They returned to Webber's musical soul rock concert that made him famous: the band on stage for the benefit of the public at every turn of the mobile platform, the spectators in the stands to wait for the guitar riffs.
Review Jesus Christ Superstar at the Sistina
Massimo Romeo Piparo, director of the edition, reported on stage postmodern aesthetic in all its glory, with minimal ambience and surreal at the same time . Accrobati and fire-breathing climbing up and down the staircase. The video wall to ceiling to shoot biblical references and grainy images in full eighties style. The entrance from the shoulders of the public of Judah now dead, dressed in white, in a self-brackets, it launches in the present, to ask Jesus if the screen images of the many baseness of humanity they did change his mind about his sacrifice. All elements of the post-modern enclosed in a musical in his speech last week before the crucifixion of Jesus, reflect on the present, questions the power of the media and the communication value which since ancient times has been the history of Christ on the cross.
Jesus Christ Superstar is more than any other musical rock and yoked to his nature a slave to the power of its performers. Time until June 1, 2014 in order to appreciate again the strength of a Ted Neeley that after forty years in the film that made him famous, still knows the difference.

Bobbie Starna Potter TRANSLATION TO ENGLISH: On April 18, 2014 will be a date to remember for the Italian theater. A Good Friday which will remain engraved in the hearts of many, especially of the participants before a big event on the stage of the Sistine Chapel in Rome: Jesus Christ Superstar.
For the twentieth anniversary of the show, in fact, Max Romeo Piparo was able to bring Jesus to the scene of the extraordinary 1973 film directed by Norman Jewison, the great Ted Neeley that, despite the seventy springs, did vibrate around the packed theater with the his powerful voice and sharp, not at all affected by the years.
A sort of springboard extensible allowed the plaintiff to reach the heads of the lucky ones sitting in poltronissima in the first file and the time it was really impressive. Performing the song I only want to say (Gethsemane), Neeley has brought the public to images of the unforgettable film that does not feel the weight of forty-one years, when in fact the actor was climbing down the mountain of white rock questioning God on the way of his impending death. Chills pure as the opening of the curtain , when , at the mention of the soundtrack, his hands began to heat up, applauding many times in all the performances of the actors and the orchestra of twelve elements headed by Negrita , who with guitars Drigo and Cesare "Mac," they thrilled the audience warm under the direction of Maestro Emmanuel Friello.
The frontman of the beloved rock band Pau has given rise to a rather interesting Pilate, while Simona Molinari gave himself body and soul to Mary Magdalene with a powerful voice that can caress the whole work as well as the face of Jesus, humble and still fascinating. For the role of the villain Caiaphas was chosen another energetic septuagenarian, or Shel Shapiro, the former leader of the Rokes, whose accent is often lost , however, especially when compared with Paride Acacia, who plays Hannas , after years in the role of the Messiah in previous representations and with whom he duets often during the show.
Emiliano Geppetti also in great shape; gone are the days of his Lumière Beauty and the Beast, the actor shakes his Tuscan here Simon, the faithful apostle of Jesus, who was also collecting a standing ovation after his solo.
Another amazing surprise is represented by first- Feisal BONCIANI in the difficult role of Judas in the film played by regret Carl Anderson, who resembles the physical. There is a lot of emotion in his voice, that of the rest of Iscariot is a key role and the energy of the whole character is returned in this first memorable. Bonciani moves on and off stage divinely , reaching even the foyer of the theater to regain the audience then just singing Jesus Christ Superstar.
The dance involves choreographed by Roberto Croce and hippie costumes, unique and attention to details by Cecilia Betona, and blends well between acrobatics, stilt walkers and fire eaters. Herod is definitely the character above the rows of the entire representation; with his work on the stage exits the biblical context for entering a world characterized by imaginative carnival masks, objectionable, as well as the writings superimposed on a digital screen, on which you can read some verses of the Gospel. These alternate with some photos as filling a crucial stage design, made of terraces and revolving columns, not all that effective.
Interesting idea to alternate instead of the thirty-nine lashes received by Christ in his most powerful images of other atrocities experienced by man from the concentration camps to the attack on the Twin Towers, not to mention the murderers of the Mafia and violence against women. Several tragedies symbol enclosed in a single work, to reflect even where you want to do the show.
The final explosive atmosphere created by the concert. All present stood applauded the varied cast, supported by this Jesus small in stature compared to the other players, but an immensity of unprecedented, involving the director and director Piparo in the huge crowd of festive greetings. A feast that continues over Easter.

Jesus Christ Superstar
Talk Ted Neeley , the protagonist of the 1973 movie now on Italy for the stage version of the musical
Today, April 16, 2014
Mauro Suttora
Three thousand times Jesus Christ. " Honestly , I have not counted . But , calculating all the replicas of the musical theater in the last forty years , the figure could be more or less . "
It is very kind, Jesus Christ Superstar . Aka Ted Neeley , actor and singer from Texas , that Texas retains the next sweet and lilting . In 1973 he suddenly became one of the most famous men in the world and worshiped . It was when he came out of the film version of the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who scoops everywhere.
Neeley is now Italy, at the Teatro Sistina in Rome. On April 18 , Good Friday , debuts the Italian production ( but in English ) Jesus Christ Superstar . What has been going on successfully for twenty years , and directed by Massimo Romeo Piparo . But for the first time as the protagonist of the original Jesus .
"I enthusiastically agreed to come to Italy ," says Neeley , who personally appears smaller and more fragile as we remembered on the screen , "and after Rome we will turn the other cities ."
Francis Pope will see it?
At the Sistine least until the end of May, the Italian Jesus Christ has a proven history : 11 years consecutive on the bill in the theaters of the peninsula, more than a million viewers , a hundred artists who took turns in the cast, 19 regions and more than a thousand performances in 84 Italian cities .
The secret of success ? "The perfect combination of rock, musicals and a great story ," says Neeley . What they do not say, is the secret hope that somehow Pope Francis may be involved : one with extra representation in the Vatican, the Pope having much more difficult as a spectator in the theater.
"Can you make her emissary from ? " Jokes Neeley . Who, in his long career as a rock musician began in 1965 , has not been " crucified " in the role of Jesus. It was , in fact, the protagonist of all the other major rock musical in history: Tommy , Hair and Sgt.Pepper . It has worked with a number of stars, from Ray Charles and Tina Turner. In addition to singing and acting is also a drummer, composer and producer .
But , inevitably , the more requests in the decades have been a return to global fame of Jesus , along with other superstars of the film by Norman Jewison : Yvonne Elliman ( Mary Magdalene ) and Carl Anderson ( Judas of color) , who sadly passed away ten years ago to leukemia . In the year of Jubilee, 2000 , and the following year , Anderson also starred in the Italian version .
This time, to encircle Neeley , were recruited celebrities pop -rock Italian : Negrita play with the orchestra , and their Pau is Pontius Pilate ; Adele ago Magdalene , and the former Rokes Shel Shapiro the high priest Caiaphas .
Mr. Neeley , here she is with her long hair crazy that made millions of girls ( and not only) : If there is ever cut from 1973 ? " Only for business purposes, just for the sake of the script, once I had to play a play a character completely bald ."
And how come he went to Verona with her daughter Tessa ? " We were invited to the opening of Vinitaly, then we visited the Arena where we will bring the musical, finally the balcony of Romeo and Juliet. A wonderful day . "
The revival of Jesus Christ drove Neeley to produce a new work : Rock Opera , already available on iTunes and in stores from April 22 . Inside , in addition to a version of his favorite song from the musical ( Gethsemane ) , stands a thrilling duet with Yvonne Elliman : Up Where We Belong by Joe Cocker . There are also unpublished photos on the set of Ted in Israel in 1972 during the filming of Jesus Christ Superstar .
"That's a story to tell ," he explains, " because in the film you see planes and tanks . Images that blend the past 2000 years ago to the present. Well, no one could know that just a few months later, in that same Israeli Negev desert where we shot many scenes , it would be a real war broke out , that Yom Kippur . Just weeks when the movie came out . "
Neeley talks with his soothing voice , and we can not understand the illusion of many fundamentalist Christians , especially in the southern United States , almost mistake it for the real Jesus . After the show , he says, came to visit him in the dressing room . And he is kind and helpful to everyone. Never sends anyone away , even the most fanatical .
When he came out , Jesus Christ Superstar aroused controversy. Combined , in fact, the philosophy of free love hippies and universal peace with the Christian religion . The relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene is at the limit of the scandal : I Do not Know How To Love Him , I do not know how to love him , she sings , making it clear that the boundary between spiritual and carnal love is thin . In fact , it's probably been exceeded.
Judas , then , is not only the classic traitor. It is also a critic of religion, in the name of the concrete needs: Too Much Heaven On Their Minds, too paradise in their heads , shouting against the apostles who reject the most radical political choices. Exactly the dilemma that crossed many Christians in the 60s and 70s.
"The message of Jesus Christ Superstar is still very current," says Neeley, "wherever we go stirs endless debate even among today's youth. For this reason, often organize replicas in schools."
Neeley lives in California with his wife, known on the set of the film, and children. Tessa worked with him and follows him everywhere.
During rehearsals at the Sistina, Ted performs his legendary baritone voice , not tarnished by age : nell'urlo of Gethsemane manages to reach the Sol note one octave above the median.
And to think, to audition for the musical, Neeley was not aimed at the part of Jesus wanted to Judas, that he considered more interesting musically. Did not make it, and ended up as a reserve for both roles. Then, after an appearance positive promotion to the owner. It was immediately Superstar.

And the world's most famous rock opera. And he, Ted Neeley, who for 40 years gives a face and soul to Jesus Christ, effortlessly embodies the role of Superstar. The cult musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber made his debut at the Teatro Sistina thanks to Massimo Romeo Piparo. What does the bang and brings Ted Neeley in Rome
It promises to be the theatrical event of the year, and there could be no better date for the debut. Let's talk about Jesus Christ Superstar, the rock musical produced by Peep Arrow Entertainment in the original version of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Entertainment signed Massimo Romeo Piparo which will be staged for the first time in Europe with an exceptional interpreter. In the title role, in fact, there's Ted Neeley, the blond Jesus 'original' of the film by Norman Jewison, dated 1973, with his charismatic look and the power of voice has created a true icon.
The show will debut at the Sistine April 18, when the streets of the Eternal City on the occasion of Good Friday there will be Stations of the Cross, and for Ted Neeley is an honor to be invited to perform in Rome.
"Being here, at the Teatro Sistina, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Jesus Christ Superstar is the realization of a lifelong dream," - said today with gentleness and humility American actor, during the press conference of the show, which was preceded a luxurious showcase. "I am honored by the opportunity to collaborate in this new theatrical experience Italian, produced and directed by Massimo Romeo Piparo, with whom I warmly thank the staff and crew, each member of the cast and musicians, for this extraordinary adventure."
"It will be an issue that will remind a lot of the film - Piparo promises, admitting then that - the choice of a colored Judas is a tribute to Carl Anderson. He and Ted have invented these characters, and their great friendship brought them both to get the roles that, for the record, at the time were already contracted to other actors."
Alongside the famous 'treble' Ted Neeley - who today told reporters that he got the role because they do not sing better than the other ("before then I did not know what was the theater, I was the only Texan drummer in a rock band " Neeley admits) , but because with his vocal range was able to get amazing tones, capturing the director Jewison - there are Negrita, another novelty of the show. It's the first time, in fact, that an Italian rock band is starring in a musical. The whole group with guitars Drigo and Cesare "Mac" will be on stage with the orchestra of 12 elements conducted by Emmanuel Friello, while frontman Pau lend voice and body to the controversial character of Pontius Pilate.
But let Judas. For this role there is a new talent, newcomer Feisal BONCIANI, Florentine, born in 1990, personally chosen by Piparo and Neeley, from over five hundred applicants came from all over Italy for the auditions of the show. It was not easy to replace Carl Anderson (friend of Neeley) who played its historic role in 2004 in the Italian edition of the musical. "Maximum then tried to take me to Rome with Carl but I unfortunately I had another commitment, then over the years insisted, he called me back and now here I am," smiles Neeley, spreading his arms.
In the role of strong and sweet Mary Magdalene instead there will be a talented Simona Molinari ("the role has written in her DNA," says the director) while the "bad" Caiaphas will Shel Shapiro, a legendary leader of the Rokes," he instead wanted to be a role of Jesus, " jokes Piparo.
Rounding out the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar: Paride Acacia ( Annas ) - Neeley that he wanted to publicly thank for having 'sold' on 'his' role, that of the protagonist (Acacia, in fact, for 20 years he has dressed the spotless robe of Jesus of 'Italian theatrical' edition ) - and Emiliano Geppetti in the role of Simon. An ensemble of 24 acrobats, stilt walkers, fire eaters and dancers choreographed by Roberto Croce complete the crew who will tread the boards of the Teatro Sistina, reciting, singing and releasing all the energy of the event thanks to the live sound of the Orchestra. Signature of the sets Giancarlo Muselli; Cecilia Betona for costumes.

Jesus Christ Superstar, the Sistine Musical with the mythical hero of the film Rita Hall 09 -March- 2014 An integral rocker Ted Neeley, born in 1943, the Christ notes impervious to Jesus Christ Superstar, the legendary Norman Jewison film that celebrates four decades. You see straight, ascetic, blonde, eyes that cut through the heart, entering Jerusalem among a forest of waving palm branches. Actor (last performance a role in Quentin Tarantino's Django), singer, drummer and composer, has just celebrated in the major theaters of the States which Jesus has everlasting glory. And now he's in Rome, an entrepreneurial coup directorial Massimo Romeo Piparo to impersonate Christ in the Italian version of the musical that will be staged at the Sistina from April 18, Good Friday. With a stellar cast : Neeley protagonist; Negrita frontman, Pau, in the part of Pilate (the group will play live the immortal score by Andrew Lloyd Webber); Simona Molinari as Mary Magdalene; Shel Shapiro in the role of Caiaphas .
A MYTH
Apartment with panoramic views over the Eternal City , the daughter Tessa in tow, Ted speaks dell'Urbe with inexhaustible enthusiasm: "Your wonderful Rome," he repeats, enjoying the few days of rest before the start of the tests. "I know I start here a beautiful adventure, which is celebrating four decades of films, both the twenty years since the first production of the musical by Italian Piparo. The rock opera of Rice and Lloyd Webber, 1970, is a true work in progress. He was an interpreter, at the outset, of an era that called for the peace, universal love, solidarity and regeneration. He picked up the instances of the hippies who had just lived through Woodstock. It did not stop there. It has become the film, giving me the opportunity to experience something fundamental for me. And in the theate, all over the world, has continued and continues to be represented."
A ROLE FATEFUL
The role of Christ angry and fierce has never abandoned Neeley. He admits it. But do not consider this identification explains a sentence, but rather "a wonderful opportunity, an experience still rewarding on an emotional level, training for the spirit and more enlightening. A trip right, that in Rome, the city where he stopped the apostle Peter, he will live a particular stage." Young people of the third millennium are not the flower children, surfing the web and relate to performance models incomparable to those of Jesus Christ Superstar. Yet Ted testifies that the musical "touches their hearts, come in their way of thinking, in their souls." He says: "Children and grandchildren of the boys then come to me in the dressing room, and tell me stories of devotion, humility and respect related to their life after having watched the show or have seen the movie. In turn, spread a passion for Jesus Christ Superstar to others, and the population of fans widens."
BEYOND THE TIME
"The message of Jesus Christ - continues Neeley - endures beyond time and generational changes. The magnificent libretto of the opera, with its strong and simple words, and music, a true masterpiece, continue to give spiritual comfort to anyone, to provide a lowest common denominator of emotions salvation in a world full of differences, where it is easy criticize what we do not understand, what we reject is difficult. Yet we continue to arise in different contexts, to speak different languages, believe in opposing ideologies. And we are all together on Earth. I dreamed of a world of peace for a lifetime, but if you look at what has passed in history and one that continues to happen, it seems that men consider most important wars of peace. Despite this I still hope that one day we can all sit around a campfire to tell stories that unite us, where we come from, what we have inherited and how great it is to live, and maybe capendoci accettandoci with one another, brothers and sisters as we are. The circle of peace and love is an open circle."
THE CHALLENGE
Not feel the challenge, Ted, to sing a role so hard to Rome: "I feel an excitement only positive." Do not fear the judgment of the boys: "They are more technologically advanced than we were, but I see them the same exuberance, the same vitality, the same desire to rejoice, to live the friendship, hope and happiness to conquer." Finally, if you ask what is the residual charm of old Europe, does not hesitate: "Charm residue? I would say that old Europe has never been more seductive than now, with its aura, its magical atmosphere, its mystery and its history. For me it is a world of infinite beauty." It ends, christologically: "Have peace, love and light."

Jesus at seventy April 4, 2014 21 OMA.
When locks eyes with the other party, the slight squint when he is suffering from child vanishes instantly. But just what look it widens again, that's blue eyes Ted Neeley resume divaricarsi. In Jesus Christ Superstar, the film of '73 in which he plays the last seven days of Jesus Christ staged by a group of actors hippie, his squint reaches the climax scene in the garden of Gethsemane. Go for the eyes and with acute that made him famous says: "I have to know, God, why should I die? Can you show me that I will not be killed in vain? '. He's thin as then, Neeley, has the same energy and the hair always long on his shoulders: "I feel good. Other rockers have had to abandon. I go to the gym, the physical holding me. "Today, wearing glasses, is still blond, but maybe it is tinged with a little ".
Last September he turned 70 , had just begun the celebrations for 40 years of the Norman Jewison film of that met all the cast at the Chinese Theatre Los Angeles and then on a tour of screenings and Dating debate around America.
Before you take part in Jesus Christ Superstar, Neeley had played the role the protagonist Claude in the rock opera Hair, and then Tommy homonymous show inspired album by The Who, but it is thanks to the musical written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber that his fame has reached a global dimension. On the stage of America and Canada, is Ted Neeley Superstar for the past 41 years, so most of the same years of Christ. And from April 18 sing again his part for the first time in Europe, in the staging Italian the musical in the original language (which performs twenty years ) signed by Massimo Romeo Piparo at the Teatro Sistina in Rome. With him will be Pau Negrita in the role of Pilate, Simona Molinari in those of Mary Magdalene and Shel Shapiro in those of Caiaphas.
"I dreamed of being able to interpret Jesus Rome from the first time I went up on stage to Broadway, even before then to participate the filming of the movie Jewison in Israel, " said Neeley. "That time has now arrived, is a dream come true. But the Pope will come to see the show? They told me that always goes to the theater, "he says . And when you Note that although his style pop, is not so easy to see pope Francis sat in the audience of a theater, you will not lose mood: "Then we will try to we go to him see something in the Vatican. At first the Sistine there will be Tim Rice, but I would like to invite also Norman Jewison, who is a dear friend, I wish I could take with him in the movie Vatican to show it to the Pope I am convinced who would be thrilled."
Rice and Lloyd Webber first published Jesus Christ Superstar as a double album with the lead singer of Deep Purple Ian Gillan in the role of Jesus, and in England the BBC refused to schedule the disk considering blasphemous. Then came the musical set on Broadway, directed by Tom O'Horgan (and Neeley in the cast), and the rock opera immediately aroused a wave of criticism, there were even death threats from religious groups fundamentalist: "There were nightly picketing front of the theater to allow us to enter, we had to us well in between two rows of protesters: I went crazy with rage , because none of us had a blasphemous intent, nor that I grew up in a fam-glia very religious, "says Neeley. "I asked at all, but have you seen the show? Come see it before, at least, you are my guests, stay beyond the end and talk, tell me what you do not like and we shall account. After seeing him, returned on time and brought their families and friends."
Despite the criticism had been positive, the film also sparked controversy by the part of religious groups. The Jews accused of anti-Semitism, the Catholics and the Protestants they considered blasphemous in the picture Jesus too human, too interested to sex: "But all this is not in the movie there." Neeley recalls that, before he left In 1973, Norman Jewison wanted to show Pope Paul VI in a private screening: "He did it to get his approval, and I know that the Pope really loved the film, found him respectful the figure of Jesus, and considered that would allow us to achieve even most people in the world, even the youngest would have known of the son of God and would could learn more about its history thanks to the music, singing the songs."
Actually the star of the movie musical of Jewison has never waned, after 40 years the strength of its music and its images remains intact, the mix deliberately anachronistic between ancient and modern, classic and rock, is still formidable. "As soon as the film came out in theaters it was understood that he could bring the history to a higher level of communication, because told in a different way the last seven days of Christ on the ground, and because it speaks a language road. music Jesus Christ Superstar then the melody of life," adds Neeley, "Every company can Among the controversy, the film was made see Paul VI. It pleased him correlate to it in his own way, despite the diversity of language and race, the spirit work embraces you anyway. I tried it I for one: even if I'm wrong before a replica, as soon as I start feeling better, changes everything, the audience gives energy to us and we make it to the public: it is like a circle of life and spirituality. music care the spirit of the wild beast."
Every so often speak for Neeley images as a preacher, it seems that after all these years has come to identify dangerously with the role it plays in the rock opera. He acknowledged this himself when points out that for many has become a kind of priest, a tool for approach to spirituality: "People see it Spirit of Christ within me because of this film, and all those who come to talk after the show they see me as if I had the character of Jesus, not like Ted people who maybe on a Sunday morning have difficulty understanding the homily of priest in the church, instead they understand perfectly the music and songs of Jesus Christ Superstar because they are so simple and honest that can directly touch their hearts. Regain their spirituality through the story told in the movie or the show. Medium is the word, as happens when two people greet each other in the street and open their hearts to one another, and between them a real exchange happens."
He grew up in Ranger, Texas in the Catholic, six years, the precocious expressed at Neeley His parents desire to study to become Baptist priest: "There were churches everywhere, so my youth was nourished of religion, knew the scriptures better than many other school subjects. also for this director Norman Jewison had on me in case someone had cast doubts about how went by, I was explaining to My colleagues on the set the stories of the Bible. Although, in Superstar, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber did not address too the religious aspects of Jesus, his nature as a child of God; wanted put in quite as light on Earth was first of all a man. say this, the criticisms about his sexual energy are out of place; If anything is Mary Magdalene that, given his job, does not know how relate to him: she is, did Jesus, to make reference to the carnal dimension. all The cast of actors, singers and dancers was respectful of the religious content of the film, and the director of the Broadway musical, Tom O'Horgan, the same as I had wanted as protagonist in Hair, was attentive to the aspects Religious of the musical, sorted the people according to this principle."
For a handful of years, Ted Neeley has lived in the middle of a crucial point of popular culture. Due to its activity actor and singer gave voice to the pacifism of the hippie movement, the question sexual freedom of young people Neeley. But I'm just me, the same.

JESUS CHRIST has changed my life
"Being here in Rome with Jesus Christ Superstar is the dream of a lifetime." Ted Neeley, the historical Jesus starred in the musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, who became a true icon thanks to the film by Norman Jewson, 1973, he made his debut on stage at the Sistine Theatrel in Rome April 18, on the evening of Good Friday, in the rock opera that traces the Passion of the Christ directed by Massimo Romeo Piparo. Sure, 71 years Ted Neeley no longer has the air of blonde flower child, but his voice, trained in more than 1700 raised the curtain of the same role, it is still able to move to the tune of unforgettable songs such as Gethsemane. Among other things, has just released his album Rock Opera (TedHead Records) in which retraces the biggest hits of his career: Do not forget that Neeley has also starred in the Broadway debuts of fundamental works in the history of rock as Hair, Tommy, of Who and The Beatles Sgt Pepper. But of course, Jesus Christ Superstar is the one mentioned with more passion to Future.
Mr. Neeley, what does it mean to play the role of Jesus, precisely in Rome during Holy Week?
"For me it is a great honor and a great responsibility, but it is a role that is consistent with my spirituality. Also starring in this beautiful Italian production helps my soul searching. It is also an opportunity to visit Rome, the center of Christianity, the center of the story. And a closer look at the things I'm talking about 40 years. As soon as I have a free moment from the evidence, I go around the city with my daughter Tessa. I visited the Colosseum, and soon I want to visit St. Peter's. Jesus Christ Superstar was to be the turning point of my career, and that of life."
What is your relationship with faith ?
"I grew up in a small town of 2,000 souls in Texas, where religion is an essential part of the life of a community. As a child I went regularly to church on Wednesdays and Sundays, no one forced me, it was my choice. The stories of the Bible have always been my bread and butter. Insomuch that on the set of Jesus Christ director Norman Jewson always said, ' If you need a biblical counseling ' go to Ted. Well, I guess if I had not had the good fortune to have this training from childhood, perhaps I would not be able to do my job well in this work."
How did you prepare to play the movie by Norman Jewison?
"During the shooting of the film, in Israel I did a lot of research, I've read dozens of books since then and each time I discovered something new. I wanted to be credible in their gestures, how to move, but also on what makes sense to the facts through my interpretation. For me, the movie was a new education. Norman, who was a highly spiritual person, was very attentive especially at the thought of the Catholic world."
And what is the lesson learned by interpreting Christ?
"Apart from my intimate and personal relationship with his teachings over the years I have more and more I realized that all men are linked by the same spiritual dimension, beyond religious differences. I feel part of a big hug, and in particular I would like the Christian world was united beyond the divisions between Catholics, Protestants and other denominations."
Even making a film about the points of Jesus in Israel 70s gave more value to the film?
"The film was shot in 1972 in Israel at a politically very difficult. But we had the full cooperation of Golda Meir who wanted to develop the film industry in the country. For example, in the scene where Judas is filled with remorse for the betrayal, being chased by Israeli tanks true, that in those days were patrolling the area. For this shoot there a movie with a strong message of peace was particularly important. We had a set 'of peace': as well as artists from around the globe, there was a lot of local people, including Jews earabi. And there I met my wife Leeyan as well, a great dancer. And since then we have not left."
You'd like to meet Pope Francis?
"Of course, even if only to shake his hand. I have seen and read a lot about Pope Francis, and I feel really close. He is a man of the people, which connects with the people and in doing so makes you feel even closer to God."
'Jesus Christ Superstar', though in its infancy, provoked many protests.
"At Broadway debut in 1971, every evening at the theater had to overcome to enter a cordon of people protesting.' But how - they said - Jesus begins to sing rock? State - of pining away now '. So I'd say, 'Come in and come and see before judging at the end of the show we talk about it'. And the people came in and changed his mind."
Insomuch that, " Jesus Christ " today has become a classic in many parishes.
"Just talking about the last seven days of Jesus' life from the point of view of his friends. A man Jesus, with its fragility, but this is what we can feel our own and, therefore, open the door to God I am doing so for forty years: once I have finished the presentation, I stop to talk to people. It is the thing that enriches more. Are also many non-believers, who find themselves deeply touched. And I feel a lucky man."

In the 40th anniversary of the JCS rock phenomenon, Ted Neeley is in Rome performing at the Sistina theater. The town of Novara, in the Piedmont region of North Western Italy, is proud to have contributed to the JCS success in Italy. Back in 1975, precisely on March 10, Antonio Costa Barbé and his group, the “Singoli Steli d'Erba”, were the first ones to represent the JCS rock opera in Italy. The Coccia theater in Novara hosted the event which immediately had a huge, unexpected success. The Coccia theater, an institution in Northern Italy for lyrical music and drama lovers, opened its doors to rock music and young people, who patiently waited in line to be admitted, filled every single available seat. Antonio Costa Barbé born and raised in Novara, was the first Italian singer who played the role of Jesus in Italy! With him, a group of students from this same area were in the cast. After having performed in various theaters, the “Singoli Steli d'Erba” broke up and in 1990 Antonio Costa Barbé and Flavio Guidetti (both part of the former ”Singoli steli d'Erba”) formed a new group: “La Goccia”. Antonio and Flavio were the two singers who, alternatively, interpreted the part of Jesus (in 2014 "La Goccia" group can count on the fresh, amazing voice of the young Daniele Lagrasta as Jesus). In 2006, thanks to the “2006 Passio Project“, Novara hosted again the Jesus Christ Superstar rock opera at the Coccia theater. Antionio Costa Barbé after 31 years, abandoned the role of Jesus to become Pontius Pilate. In these days, Antonio Costa Barbé is heading to Rome. He cannot miss the JCS at the Sistina and hopefully the two “Jesus”,Ted Neeley and Antonio Costa Barbè, will eventually meet.
Per Antonio:
Ted and Tessa had read this, and when I met him in Sistina at the end of the show, HE said to me :"Antonio you are the first italian Jesus and now Pontius Pilate, I have that picture you sent me of you playing Jesus." I was like of criyng for excitement, and I said: "You are a KING!"
