NOTE:

Back when Ted and I were down at RTC for BeckettFest, he asked me to amend an announcement about Man of La Mancha with a statement on his pending availability. The reason, which we now know of course, was that this tour changed his availability. Tour dates can change a lot as well, so I am including Ted's statement about La Mancha here, just as a reminder that things do change at a moment's notice (for example - the misinformation about Baltimore - which is happening), so verify everything here (or with Ted, of course, if you see him) before jumping to any conclusions:

SEPTEMBER, 2004:
La Mancha IS in Ted's definite plans, PROVIDED SCHEDULING WORKS OUT AROUND RASPUTIN AND A PROPOSED JCS VATICAN/TOUR THAT HAS BEEN MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY ON TED'S LIST. (THERE IS NOTHING NEW TO REPORT ON EITHER OF THESE PROJECTS AT THIS TIME.) At this point, Ted is doing La Mancha, but if anything changes in his schedule, HE WILL LET US KNOW. All shows at RTC contain this statement: "SUBJECT TO CHANGE". Now I am NOT - repeat NOT - saying he's not doing La Mancha, just that if certain things Ted is working on change his availability, there is a REMOTE - and I mean a REMOTE - chance that this could change. I will say that Ted doesn't believe it will change, and that he will do La Mancha - he just wanted everyone to know that this is the way he wants his "OFFICIAL" statement worded at this time.

Just a few days before a plan for expanding the Crystal Centre is discussed, another event scheduled for the arena has been cancelled because of low ticket sales.

Jesus Christ Superstar, one of the most well-known musical theatre shows in North America, was scheduled to perform Jan. 4, in Grande Prairie.

The cancellation was announced Friday with less than 600 tickets sold since they went on sale Oct. 2.

It's the second show to be cancelled in recent weeks. The Stone Temple Pilots concert was cancelled in November because of "scheduling conflicts."

Jesus Christ Superstar promoter Nancy Romanycia, with Jeff Parry Promotions in Calgary, said it's hard to know why the show didn't sell.

"It's not an easy market to sell in," she said of the city. "I don't know (why), I'm not in Grande Prairie."

Now, instead of coming to Grande Prairie, the show will add an extra date to its stop at the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton where it was already scheduled to perform Jan. 2.

Set in two acts, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the final seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The performance dramatizes Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity, his betrayal by Judas, the trial before Pontius Pilate, and his ultimate crucifixion.

The current tour of the show stars Ted Neeley, best known for his Golden Globe-nominated role as Jesus in the Norman Jewison film of Superstar.

Crystal Centre general manager Jane Cada-Sharp said a few people were still looking to buy tickets Friday as Christmas presents, but defended the cancellation because it was clear ticket sales were slow.

"We're extremely disappointed," she said. "Our daily sales just weren't there."

Superstar came to Grande Prairie several years ago and sold well. Cada-Sharp referred to it as "a fantastic show" but this time it didn't resonate. The arena GM said the Crystal Centre is heavily involved in marketing the show and said Jeff Parry Promotions also put a lot of effort into advertising the event.

"They would have pulled out all the stops," she said.

Tickets for the show were priced between $44.50 and $74.50. Cada-Sharp said it was the most expensive tickets that were selling the best. She blamed the economy as the main reason and said she's not worried the city will develop a bad reputation for poor ticket sales.

"You're always concerned, it depends on the act," she said.

The next two major shows for the Crystal Centre are country music singers Charlie Pride and Reba McEntire. Both shows are selling very well, especially McEntire, said Cada-Sharp.

"People are being more careful where they spend their money."

Tomorrow, a city council committee is scheduled to review a plan for expanding the Crystal Centre, a proposal that has been around in various forms since 2002. The main reason an expansion is being sought is to provide a better venue for events such as concerts and theatre shows.
